Virginia Slim were first introduced as cigarettes for women by Philip Morris Tobacco Company in the late 1970's. They were distributed as the lighter version of the Benson and Hedges brand. Till late 1979 Virginia Slims were acting as subsidiary cigarettes, each pack of Virginia Slims had the words Benson and Hedges inscribed at the bottom, but after 1970's this was removed and they were considered as a standalone brand. Virginia slims are perfect for working women, the smooth taste and rich aroma of this brand acts as perfect mood enhancer and stress buster, which seems to be lacking in other women specific brands. The makers of this brand have introduced many slogans to target professional women. Few of them are, "It's a woman thing," "You've come a long way, baby!" and "Find your voice."
Virginia Slims designed the cigarettes to suit women smokers, the cigs made were thinner and longer than the regular brands; they produced cigarettes which were 100 mm, and the longest was 120 mm. Thinner and longer dimensions gave the cigarettes more elegant and fashionable look, which was done to attract more female smokers. It was also thought that these cigarettes reduced the amount of smoke in the air, thereby reducing the harm they cause to the smoker.
Since these cigarettes are mainly used by women, the packaging too is simple yet chic and compact. Each pack of Virginia Slims has stripes on the left side and the color of the stripes indicates the flavor and type of the cigarette. There are totally eleven variants of this brand, all the different varieties come in regular and menthol flavors. The menthol variant of this brand is very popular and is the best sold variant of this brand. Virginia Slim menthol cigarettes make up nearly 55 percent of market share for this brand.
